Top 5 Lakes to Boat on in California

California has some of the most beautiful places to visit in the United States. It is a state full of natural beauty and sights to see. Some of those magnificent sights can be enjoyed from the comfort of your own or a rental boat. And, I’m not talking about the ocean. I’m talking about California Lakes.

Some of these lakes are hidden gems as they may not be as popular as the sandy beaches, National Parks, or popular cities California is known for. However, they shouldn’t be overlooked because you may just find your new favorite vacation spot. All California lakes are full of their own beauty.

A boat cruise on a lake in California might just give you some of the best views you could find. Think about it, cruising on your pontoon boat and looking at the sunset through the mountain peaks. That view is unlike anything else you will be able to find elsewhere making this adventure so unique.

Although all the lakes in California hold a high level of beauty and sights to see, I’m going to give you a list of the top 5. These lakes have been highly rated and recommended by adventurers just like yourself. Be sure to check out a few of these lakes next time you are in California to enjoy world-class views.

1. Lake Tahoe

It could be argued that Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places in the United States. It is known around the world for its unmatched views of the surrounding Sierra-Nevada Mountains and its crystal-clear waters. Not only is it a stunning lake but it’s also the second deepest lake in the United States making it perfect for all kinds of boating.

During the summer months, many people travel to Lake Tahoe to enjoy the beautiful views while also enjoying their favorite water activities. For those who don’t own a personal boat or just choose not to travel with it, there are many marinas to choose from to rent a boat. Enjoy activities such as fishing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, snorkeling, or swimming while visiting.

Be sure to check out other activities when on dry land. There are plenty of restaurants, hiking trails, ziplining, and many other activities that will show you the true beauty of the area. If you decide to visit Lake Tahoe, I can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. It is most definitely one lake you’ll want to put on your bucket list.

If you find yourself in this area in the Winter, you won’t be disappointed either. The surrounding Mountains have multiple Ski Resorts that overlook the lake. You can also hike and snowmobile around the lake in the cooler months. There are plenty of activities for everyone no matter the time of the year.

2. Shasta Lake

Shasta Lake is the largest man-made lake in the state of California. It was constructed to dam the Sacramento River as a form of flood control for the Sacramento area. The dam also provides power to surrounding areas.

This is another jaw-dropping, gorgeous lake. No matter if you are in the center of the lake or in an inlet, the views are breathtaking. Shasta Lake is a perfect lake for any boat-related activities. You can take a jet ski out for a spin or rent an entire houseboat. Whatever type of boating you prefer, Shasta Lake has it all.

It is also highly recommended by water sports fans. It is a great lake for watersports because of its calm and quiet water. This lake is protected by forests and mountains hiding it from the wind other lakes can’t escape from. Head out on the water in the morning to enjoy some picture-perfect water skiing conditions with the gorgeous backdrop of the mountains.

With easy accessibility, you can even bring your own boat over to the lake. There are multiple different marinas with public launches available. However, be sure you have a plan in place for where you will keep your boat tied. You may need to rent a slip so be sure you plan your trip in advance.

Lake Shasta is also a fishing hotspot. With over 20 different species, you’ll come away with an awesome fish story to tell your friends. You can enjoy the scenic views and the peaceful water all while fishing. What could be better?

3. Big Bear Lake

Another lake known for its outstanding views and crystal clear waters is Big Bear Lake. Big Bear Lake draws a lot of attention because of its location within the state of California. It is located in Southern California, making it an easy drive from Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

Big Bear Lake is the perfect getaway if you need to get out of the city and spend some time on a boat. Any boat activities you can think of are possible if you visit this lake. You can go fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking, wakeboarding, tubing, jet skiing, and more.

One unique thing about Big Bear Lake is the opportunity to tour the lake on one of the multiple guided tour boats. One unique tour is on a pirate ship that was crafted to replicate the pirate ship from the movie, Time Bandit. Your family and friends can privately rent the ship to tour the lake. There are also 3 other ferries on the lake that offer tours as well. You don’t even have to own or rent a boat to enjoy the beauty of this lake.

Big Bear Lake is also surrounded by mountains which separate it from lakes around the country. It is surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest, with breathtaking views unlike anywhere else in the United States.

4. Trinity Lake

Trinity Lake, also known as Clair Engle Lake is a unique lake in Northern California. Located just a few miles Northwest of Shasta Lake, Trinity Lake is surrounded by gorgeous views similar to Shasta Lake. With 147 miles of shoreline, there is plenty of room to escape the busy marina area and find your own inlet. Trinity Lake encompasses the beauty of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest without the hustle and bustle of Shasta Lake. If you’re looking for a quiet escape, Trinity Lake may be the perfect destination for you.

Trinity Lake is known for its world-class trout and bass fishing. This factor draws groups from all over to check out this fishing spot.

Another factor that draws crowds to Trinity Lake is the availability of houseboat rentals. You can rent a houseboat and have a relaxing vacation right on the water. You are also able to rent jet skis, deck boats, fishing boats, pontoons, kayaks, and paddleboards for the time you plan to spend on the lake. The possibilities of on-water activities are endless. You can do whatever interests you the most at this beautiful destination.

5.    Crowley and Grant Lakes

These lakes are grouped together because you get the same thing out of either of them. If you’ve ever visited the Mammoth Lakes area you can expect to see some amazing views from these lakes. Both are located in the heart of the mountains giving visitors an astonishing backdrop.

Both Crowley and Grant Lakes are somewhat of a hidden gem in California because of their exclusive location. To get to these lakes, you’ll have to do a bit of traveling as they are some distance away from larger California cities. However, if you do make the trip, I have no doubt you’ll enjoy your time on these two beautiful bodies of water.

Regulations have been set to help everyone enjoy the lakes to the fullest extent. There is a no-wake rule anytime before 10 am to allow fishermen to enjoy their peace and quiet on the lake. After 10 am, boaters are welcome to do whatever water sports they’d like. Whether it’s waterskiing, wakeboarding, or jet skiing, you have free rein over the water.

These lakes are a hidden gem and if you ever want to escape the more populated lakes of California, be sure to check these two out. However, if you don’t like a cooler climate, this may not be the area for you. Although less busy, these lakes typically don’t get super warm even during the summer months like some of the other popular lakes in California.
