5 Tips for Navigating Through Rough Waters

Big water can seem a little intimidating, but don’t sweat it! Arm yourself with everything there is to know about boating on those rough waters.

When you're out on large bodies of water, it's not just about having the right equipment—it’s about mastering the art of handling those bigger waves. Here are the five most important  tips to make sure you’re riding those waves like a boss:

Distribute Weight to the Back

When the waves start picking up, move any heavy items (and passengers) toward the back of the boat. This shift in weight helps keep the bow higher, which prevents it from dipping into the waves and taking on water, ensuring a smoother ride.

Trim the Motor Up

Trimming your motor up slightly lifts the bow, reducing drag and allowing your boat to glide over the waves rather than plow through them. This can make a huge difference in maintaining control and comfort when the water gets rough.

Keep a Steady Pace

It’s essential to maintain a consistent speed when navigating through waves. Position your boat so that it’s riding between two waves, almost like surfing the trough. This technique helps to minimize the impact of each wave and keeps the ride more comfortable for everyone on board.

Approach Waves at an Angle

Always approach waves at an angle rather than head-on. This method allows your boat to slice through the waves instead of slamming into them, reducing the jarring impact and making for a much smoother ride.

Adjust Your Speed When Needed

If the waves are particularly large, don’t be afraid to slow down. Reducing your speed gives you better control and helps avoid the roughest impacts, making it easier to navigate through challenging conditions.

With the right pontoon, like a Barletta, and the proper techniques, large bodies of water don’t have to be intimidating. Whether you’re on a massive lake or venturing into coastal waters, your Barletta is more than capable of handling the adventure. So go ahead—embrace the open water and let your pontoon show you just how capable it really is!
